Radical Acceptance
Radical Acceptance is another way of saying, we stop fighting what is and surrender. We can have the best of plans for the day but a fussy baby, a sick baby, your partner needing to go out and leave you alone, or all of your childcare plans canceling can put us into a tailspin. We may be left scrambling trying to “fix” everything. Sometimes we have to just surrender to the moment. Lean into the fact that your baby wants to cluster feed all day and for this, moment, let go of the plans you have that included deep cleaning the house after walking the dogs and writing thank you notes.
Maybe today you get nothing done but feeding your baby. You can fight it or surrender to it and grab a book or find some movies to watch all day. It won’t be forever and it feels so much better inside to not fight with what we thought was going to be.
Common moments from moms that call on the practice of radical acceptance:
Cluster feeding.
The babysitter calls in sick.
The baby stays up all night.
Growth spurt.
Teeth coming in.
Dealing with depression or anxiety during pregnancy or the postpartum period.
Finding it hard to lose post-pregnancy weight.
When you find yourself in a moment, you can’t control and you wish it were different. Try to surrender. Accept where you are and what is happening. Know that this moment will not be forever.
